Review: Lovebites – Outstanding Power

Outstanding Power

Napalm Records

There are heavy music fans who are unapologetic traditionalists at heart but still crave something from newer artists. Since 2016 Lovebites have filled at least a part of that need with their rather grand take on power metal. The Japanese quintet blend a European (specifically 80s UK) vibe with the technical ability we’ve come to admire of artists from their country. Latest record ‘Outstanding Power’ continues their progress without deviation from what has become a trademark sound. Think a female take on classic Iron Maiden and you’ll get most of the picture. Here the group show they’ve developed well with the writing more rounded than ever. We also get a power ballad, the anthemic ‘Eternally’ giving Asami a great spotlight for her more delicate vocals to shine. It’s one of seven tracks out of twelve that weigh in at five minutes or over, unusual by today’s standards. That extra time allows the songs to breathe, to sound natural and unforced making the whole album a great listen. Now with the legendary Napalm Records on board Lovebites have really hit their stride.
