Sexsomnia
Forbidden (EP)
Self-Released
An extended play is often the best way to check out a band; a few tracks and a limited running time is just enough for a band to show off their wares whilst whetting the listener’s appetite. That’s certainly the case with SEXSOMNIA’s latest release, Forbidden, a multifaceted four-tracker that shines light in every direction like a black diamond. The band are based in Montreal, but have a strong international flavour, and Forbidden’s title-track features a guest spot from Polish vocalist Marita Volodina, whose ghostly words wend their way through the electronica as if a friendly spectre through a moonlit cemetery. With a distinctly post-punk bass rumble ‘Vapor’ is an intoxicating, addictive affair that beats a nifty beat on your eardrums and like the following track (a remix of ‘Forbidden’), it is nigh on impossible to sit still when it pours from the speakers. Mastered by Attrition’s Martin Bowes (the George Martin of the goth world), the EP has a bold sound that rolls the diverse musical backgrounds of the three band members of SEXSOMNIA into a cohesive whole. Mr Bowes also remixes the final track ‘Nigrum Viduam’ to render Forbidden the perfect calling card, making this EP a (forbidden) fruit you’ll want to take a bite from again and again.
