Review: Tatv Gral – Treachery (EP)

Treachery (EP)

Whilst remixes are an anathema to some fans, for others they are a revelation and can reveal facets of an artist that’d otherwise remain buried. Treachery falls very much in the latter camp. It contains the single version of the title-track, along with three radical reinterpretations upon which artists DSTR, Tweaker, and [melter] stamp their own personalities, and in doing so have revealed other, more emotional, sides of Tatv Gral. It is with Gral’s version that this EP opens, and it’s a sublime slab of dark synth (with the emphasis on dark) that’s haunting and ethereal, and swirls around the listener like a (not so) friendly spectre. With each contributing artist given the remit of uncovering hidden nuances within the song, they’ve created radically different versions that ensures ‘Treachery’ is merely the diving board from which this EP jumps, and it’s a leap into the unknown; rather than being mere facsimiles (we have the original for that), these remixes take the listener on a musical journey through longing, calamity and it’s after-effects, with the passion injected into each remix weighing heavy. Not only is Treachery a voyage in itself, but also a great starting point from which to explore each artist involved.
