Review: Moons In Retrograde – The Third Side Of The Coin

Moons In Retrograde

The Third Side Of The Coin

Self-Released

As the nights start to draw in and winter starts to bite, it feels that this is the perfect season to enjoy Moons In Retrograde’s deliciously dark sound. Ice cold, stark and glacial, a fusion of trip pop and darkwave, it perfectly captures that magical moment somewhere betwixt wake and sleep. It’s a space where buried emotions and repressed feelings are explored, and that’s exactly the aesthetic debut album The Third Side Of The Coin serves up. Two EPs or an album of two halves, it delves into the duality of the universe, the juxtaposition between light and shade, and the alchemy that lies in the middle (hence the title). The brainchild of Kara Kuckoo, a multidisciplined artist who brings a wealth of theatrical experience to this project, means that there’s a very visual aspect to songs such as ‘The Rotten Tree’. Like a sleepwalker traversing a forest at midnight, these tracks have an ethereal, otherworldly quality and like daydreams that become nightmares, ‘The Rotten Tree’ will burrow roots into your psyche. Such is the immersive nature of this release that you’ll feel strangely disoriented at its conclusion, as if roused from a deep sleep, but you’ll want to keep delving into its depths again and again.
