Live Review: Sumo Cyco and Eville, The Bodega, Nottingham

It’s a hot and sticky Nottingham that greets people for this well supported gig so the fact that the venue is at least initially a little cooler than outside is welcomed by all. Eville soon raise the temperature both literally and figuratively though, their hyper rock perfect for the occasion. Three piece they may be, and then only with a part time live guitar, but the sound is full and the tempo fresh and fun. With vocal contrast adding definition this is a band very much heading upwards rapidly.

It’s seven long years since Sumo Cyco last graced the UK and they’ve put out two albums in that time so you’d expect an unfamiliar set list and a bit of a loss of momentum. Not a bit of it though, if anything this is a sharper, tighter and more fluent version of the band, a Sumo Cyco 2.0 if you like. The new material is not just progress, it’s way ahead of the curve and absolutely rocks in a live environment. Their loyal fans know every note and word too happily singing along. Skye’s voice is strong in every department mixing stunning clean singing with perfectly weighted fry and screams. Crowd engagement is maxed out making this more a party than just a gig. Please don’t leave it so long next time guys, because tonight shows just how much you were missed.
