Live Review: As December Falls and Eville, The Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes

When you see Eville launch into their set you are looking at musical direction of travel. The β€˜brat metal’ (their words) trio have that hyped energy and disregard for genre boundaries that have carried the likes of Wargasm so far. They have huge amounts of groove and give off infectious dance vibes within their heavy sound. The legendary Craufurd Arms bounces to the beat, the show whizzing by in the blink of an eye. There’s a seismic shift happening in the scene right now, the old guard is swiftly vanishing and new upstarts are rewriting the rules. Eville look well placed to join the party.

You can learn a lot about a band when things go awry. Tonight the technology gremlins have hit As December Falls meaning a slight delay to their entrance and then a microphone failure. The Nottingham funsters deliver a masterclass in audience engagement to more than ably manage the situation before blitzing a sold out venue with pure class. The music, straddling pop, rock and emo is already uplifting, but the manner of delivery takes it into the stratosphere. Bethany Hunter has a smile that won’t quit and a voice that cuts deep while melting hearts. She’s not flying solo when it comes to the all important banter either with guitarist Ande Hunter chipping in regularly. This is a group that are making all the right kind of waves. They are passionately DIY. And crucially they write consistently high quality songs. Tonight is one of those I was there occasions, seeing an act looking like they are about to take another huge leap forwards.
