Black Honey at Village Underground was one of those nights: you walk in and instantly know it’ll be sweat soaked. The place was packed. The floor heaved, and you could barely move when the lights dropped.
Support came from Girl Group, who opened with a short, punchy set that did exactly what an opener should: scrappy guitars, bursts of energy, and a hint of chaos perfectly matched the room. By halfway through, heads were nodding, and a few at the front were properly into it. They didn’t overdo it—just blasted through, warmed up the room, and set the ideal tone for the night.

Black Honey opened with ‘To the Grave’, which is about as subtle as it sounds. There was definitely no gentle build, just straight into it. The energy picked up right where Girl Group left off. ‘I Like the Way You Die’ and ‘Beaches’ followed. The crowd was already shouting every word back. It didn’t feel polite or rehearsed; it was more like a release. The sound in that room, when it’s full, has this dense weight to it. You feel tracks like ‘Heavy’ in your chest.
There’s a sharpness to the newer material live. ‘Spinning Wheel’ and ‘Insulin’ landed especially well; they were tight and punchy. Then you’d get something like ‘Slow Dance,’ which slowed the pace just enough to let everyone sway for a minute before snapping back into ‘Psycho’ and ‘Dead.’ That mid-set run seemed relentless, and ‘Lemonade’ and ‘Carroll Avenue’ kept the momentum high; nobody around was standing still.

Izzy had total command without over-talking it: a quick thank you, a half-smile, then straight into the next song. ‘Vampire in the Kitchen’ felt huge in that room, and by the time they hit ‘All My Pride’, the heat was unreal. People were fanning themselves with whatever they had, and when the lights came up, the crowd looked wrecked in the best way, a fitting end to such an intense show.
It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t overthought. It was loud, direct, and completely committed. The band radiated charm and confidence, such a brilliant night!
