Review: This House We Built – Get Out Of The Rain

Get Out Of The Rain

Self-Released

As many will know, the UK is known for rain. So, what better way to avoid it than to heed Scarborough rockers This House We Built’s advice to get out of the rain and listen to their new album of a similar title? Firstly, ‘Get Out Of The Rain’ has a warm, bright positivity that radiates. The sort that brings a smile to your face and conjures images of the band recording the album in high spirits – hell, “Coming Home To You” is crying out for a sepia-tinged studio music video of just that. With “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll”, try not smiling during the upbeat chorus with its use of cowbell and “it’s only fucking rock ‘n’ roll, but we like it!” refrain – to not enjoy it is to be dead. Also, the heart on display throughout is wonderful. You have self-affirming tracks like ‘Better Man’ professing to becoming more, your standard “addicted to you” rockin’ love song in ‘Addiction’, and the hopeful opener ‘Rain’ – all demonstrating that This House We Built are more than just classic rock themes. Special mention should go to ‘Desires’ for the curve-ball – the opening sample suggests it will be a sleazy ode to cock rock, but, suddenly, an anthem for positivity and overcoming mental health struggles. Kudos! Sometimes all you want is a dependable rock record to throw on and give you a little boost of joy. From the front to the back, This House We Built’s ‘Get Out Of The Rain’ is a prime candidate for that job: an album of slickly produced, 80s-influenced hard rock that shines with warmth and light. Perfect for these cold winter days as we wind down 2025.
