Review: Royale Lynn – Black Magic

Black Magic

Epitaph Records

A sugar rush of high pitch perfection, ‘Black Magic’ is stacked with massive electro metal ragers that crave attention. It’s an absolute mountain of sound, whose mental health-focused lyrics are endlessly moving and tracks are monumental. The sound self-professed ‘metalhead from a small town’, Royale Lynn has crafted is huge. Layers of synths ranging from ethereal to ferocious, crunchy riffs, body-slamming beats. It’s infectious. Fan of Rory? Evanescence? Alt Blk Era? Poppy? Queen Lzzy Hale? Get this on. You’re welcome. Taunting and haunting ‘WTCH’ is an ass-kickin’ killer track. ‘Battleground’ tells of escaping a toxic relationship. ‘Dark Mode’ lets us into Royale Lynn’s torment at being a lot different in a little town. The Nashville based artist tears at the stitches that hold together the fragile human heart and mind, ripping them open, and writing tracks about the demons and experiences it reveals. Through ‘Black Magic’, Royale Lynn offers acceptance, understanding and anthems – in a way that only someone who can bravely blend talent and experience can.
