Shapes Of Midnight
Killer Candy Records
You could do far worse than take ‘The Masque Of The Red Death’ by Edgar Allen Poe as a starting point for a concept album. Throw in some modern day all too real nightmares we are seeing unfolding and the result is a rock album brimming with bangers. Uncle Acid & the deadbeats definitely know how to pen a tune with their retro vibe taking on a little sludge vibe in places. Even the production plays to the strengths of each song. There’s a richness and warmth given off rather than clinical sharpness so as you listen you get enveloped and drawn in. Importantly nothing is overblown. The riffs do their job, the rhythms are allowed to work consistently and critically guitar solos are short, sweet and memorable. ‘Shapes Of Midnight’ is a macabre and entertaining piece of 21st century psychedelia that simply hits all the right spots.
