Review: Sixth Wonder – Prologue (EP)

Sixth Wonder

Prologue (EP)

Self-Released

Glasgow is a city renowned for breeding hardy folk and on the strength of Sixth Wonder’s debut EP it births robust bands, too. As we reach the end of genre, styles are fusing like never before and Sixth Wonder have formulated a sound all their very own. It’s an intriguing mixture of djent and pop that’s painted upon a cinematic canvas and the result are songs that veer between the heaviest metalcore and the lightest ethereal moments (and all within the same song). It’s a discombobulating soundscape that welcomes us to Prologue’s world and means that when the band kick in at the 30-second mark, they kick in hard. There’s a push and pull throughout this EP and no more so than with Rebekah Kirk’s vocals; from deathlike growls to the sweetest trill, the voice becomes an instrument in itself and adds an extra layer to an already full and lustrous sound. As many of the heritage groups start shuffling off towards the great gig in the sky, it’s time for a new breed of bands to take their place, and Sixth Wonder are going to lead the charge. Featuring five visceral tracks, Prologue makes the perfect calling card and that’s precisely what this release is: a preliminary that’s full of promise.
