Review: Lost Velvet – Dark Cells

Lost Velvet

Dark Cells

Self Released

We’re not massive fans of confining bands to genres. Which musician wants to be caged? But you gotta be cruel to be kind sometimes, cos how else can you best describe what their music actually sounds like? It’s the reverse of this head scratcher with Lost Velvet, however. We could give you at least ten genres that this Reading duo can be comfy in – and still not adequately describe their sound. Shoegaze? Cinematic? Coldwave? Indie? Post rock? Grunge? Yes, yes, yessity yes. All these and more. ‘Dark Cells’ is intriguing, mesmerising, visionary and pretty damn refreshing. Lost Velvet can do unsettling (‘Summer’s Gone’), celestial (‘2003’), dreamy (‘There’) – anything really. Apart from dull, predictable and ordinary. ‘Dark Cells’ is not just an album. It’s an experience.
