Ahead of the launch of her latest album ‘The Dark’ and her upcoming performance at Arctangent festival, Chelsea Wolfe performed an intimate, exclusive early preview in London.
Upon arrival, it was clear this was going to be a special evening; all guests were handed a candle at the door to light (switch on) during the show before walking up the stairs, draped in white organza. The venue was dimly lit with candles and more draped fabric, and the atmosphere was magical; the album played as the room filled, and it was wonderful to see people’s reactions.
Then came the main event, and Chelsea took to the stage amidst swirling smoke and low lights, maintaining the mystical atmosphere. Her soothing voice immediately enchanted the room, letting the music wash over them like a tide as they swayed together. Chelsea’s stage presence is both unassuming and commanding at once, a truly powerful combination that lets the music and her velvet voice speak for themselves. One of the best things about the show was hearing songs that most people in the room were encountering for the first time. There were a few moments where you could feel the crowd trying to work out what they were hearing before being completely pulled into it. It’s a different kind of energy from a show built around familiar songs, and it made the night feel genuinely unique.
Making new material land isn’t always easy; sometimes you need to sit in the music, consume it, and learn it before it becomes significant, but for most of the show, that wasn’t the case. It was beautiful to see such an instant connection. Speaking of that connection, there was a beautiful and poignant moment during ‘Cold’ when the candles were lit, deepening that bond and adding a really special element.
On first hearing and experiencing this album live, raw and new, it is captivating and beautiful, a must-listen for Chelsea fans old and new.
