Review: The Chronicles Of Manimal And Samara – Origins

The Chronicles Of Manimal And Samara

Origins

Self Released

As someone who spends all day mainlining heavy music I thought I’d heard all it all, so it was something of a revelation to stumble upon London-based duo The Chronicles Of Manimal And Samara and the curveball they throw with their latest album Origins. Like light fractured and reflected through a kaleidoscope, this record is a dazzling array of sounds that are pieced together in a way that shouldn’t work, but somehow does. Progressive in the purest definition, this pair are charting new musical territory and bring back spoils for our delight and delectation. Fusing metal to ska, classical to electronica, and ethereal poetry to guttural growls, this band is a colourful patchwork quilt of sound. While the sonic shifts can often be startling, they’re strangely cohesive and it is this constant flux and motion which keeps the listener engaged through six shapeshifting songs. However, these aren’t just random sounds thrown together; there’s a clear line of travel as the album takes on form and slowly becomes the sum of its parts. In a case of fortune favouring the brave, Origins blossoms into a satisfying album and one that suggests that this is the beginning of a long quest.
