Review: Tribe Of Ghosts – City

Tribe Of Ghosts

City

Self-Released

Recalling the last year of touring bands, you likely spotted the name Tribe Of Ghosts on a bill. This four-piece, Brighton’s own dystopian darlings, are arguably the most multifaceted band, with a sound that’s truly their own. Their debut album, ‘City’, is a testament to this, capturing their feral artistic nature in ten unique stories.

‘City’ opens with a powerful instrumental, a sonic force that immediately captivates the listener and sets the totalitarian tone for the journey into the album. ‘Hive’ is a beloved track that immediately delves into the band’s core – the dual voices of Beccy Blaker and Adam Sedgwick. Their contrasting styles, like a fine wine and cheese pairing, add depth to the music. The blend of their raspy, commanding, raucous, and clean sung ‘there is hope’ style vocals is a true auditory delight.

‘Cold’ Is a beautiful crescendo of thunderous drums courtesy of Danny Yates as Beccy’s savage unruly fever pitch screams echo against the rapturous guitar work that builds into unrivalled outrage. Ben Kitchings’ bass is the sound glue that seamlessly ties in each composition. This layered work is the essence of TOG and what makes them exceptional.

‘’False Gods’ enters into a delicious void of pop, industrial and metal mix and shows strikingly how a track can be both accessible and completely next level. ‘Desolation Will Be Their Only Reward’ is an angst ridden, dramatic and disjointed electronic experimental track that digs deep into a world of despair, destruction and frustration. Its cinematic values and brutal riffage, like a powerful movie soundtrack, make your hairs stand on end. A static mess of the times.

City’ is a beautiful cataclysmic record of Catharism, a concept that signifies a spiritual purity and simplicity, of hope, of absolution and of unified strength. A worthy mixed genre melding debut offering from a band who have undeniably and deservedly just ascended into the upper echelon.
