Jonathan Hulten

Forest Sessions CD and DVD

In 2020 Jonathan Hulten ex guitarist of Swedish Metal outfit Tribulation embarked upon his solo career and released his debut album ‘Chants From Another Place’ a mesmerising and beautiful dive into a wonderful world accompanied by stunning artwork and animated music videos.

Since its release Jonathan has taken these tracks and the tracks from earlier EP ‘Where The Gloom Becomes Sound’ and has expanded on them taking them to new depths. Taking to the Forest and the mountains and all in between to connect further with the music, new album ‘The Forest Sessions’ was then born! This is not simply a reworking of his earlier songs but what feels like an extended journey into the depths of the soul of each of them, they certainly had more to say, and this album brings that all to the surface.

Opening with the rustling of wind through the trees you’re transported into an ethereal and beautiful world where each note is delicately and carefully placed, and the true intricacy and depth of their composition really shines. This brand of artistic acoustic folk really is unique. Jonathan’s voice trips and glides alongside the music with incredible range which is both haunting and goose bump inducing, a true and pure talent.

Accompanying the CD release is a DVD of visual delights. ‘The Forest Sessions’ were recorded in the forests outside of Stockholm and they showcase and elevate the true beauty of the songs. Atmospheric is an understatement here, from the candlelight and incense to his enigmatic image, shrouded in a dark veil with intricately painted face and carefully placed jewels all reflecting perfectly his otherworldly and unique nature. Like an art nouveau gypsy wraith taking us by the hand and leading us on a strange and wonderful voyage across the wilds and through forest glades, past babbling brooks and into the swirling fog with each step more beautiful than the last!

To further guide us through these sessions there is an introduction to each song in the form of a poem and animation also created by Jonathan – there is seemingly no end to his talents. If you are already a fan of his work, then this is an absolute gem to add to the collection and if you are only now discovering him this will just blow you away. This is the type of music that alters the very fabric of your soul, it’s enriching and delicious and Jonathan’s vision is wonderfully executed and brought to life. An absolute must listen and watch!
