Let’s be honest about this, some technical metal might well be technically precise, but it often lacks warmth. It can be a bit like a minimalist house when what you really need is the personality of an actual home. Psycroptic bring that warmth, in fact they rain down firestorms of that yearned for personality on latest opus ‘The Pulse Of Annihilation’. Yes their music here is tight but it’s also well rounded and brilliantly thought out. This is an album that changes up and down the gears with smart tempo shifts and imaginative arrangements. The production is spot on too enhancing the organic vibe. In many ways this feels a bit like an extension of those early extreme metal days, a bit of a rediscovery of a path left untrodden only very much in the now. This is an album that shows that slide rule exactness only really works when the writing itself is also strong. It is how brutally heavy music should sound.
