As barriers tumble and styles cross pollinate, music is becoming a homogeneous beast with the very idea of different genres becoming redundant. So, it’s heartening that there are bands still playing balls-to-the-wall, old school heavy metal, and they don’t come much more metal than Bavarian-based quintet StormHammer. Peddling a rather nice line in the power variant, this crew have an epic sound that ticks all the right boxes from the soaring vocals to pounding drums via noodling guitars, the ten songs comprising latest album Wrath Of The Hammer is pretty much everything you’d want from a metal record. After releasing some decidedly average albums early in their career, StormHammer have come into their own of late and Wrath finds them at the peak of their powers. Confidence is a prerequisite when performing power metal, it’s necessary to sing songs about war and mythology with conviction and there is an authenticity emanating from this disc which sets StormHammer apart from their peers. Vocalist M. Nox is in fine form turning songs such as ‘Guardians Of The Night’ into cinematic affairs, and in tandem with an equally versatile band, will fill your mind with all sorts of grand visions. Wrath Of The Hammer finds StormHammer armed and dangerous.
