Punk metal lends itself so well to angry activism and raging against increasing injustices. It’s a genre straddling beast that has maximum engagement. Hawxx though take it to even new heights on their second long player ‘The World Splits Open’. This band, as the saying goes, are not fucking about! With titles like ‘Macho Bullshit’ and ‘Arm The Animals’ you can already guess what direction the lyrics will take and how passionate they will be – and you’d correct. First and foremost it’s the music that grabs you. The writing and arrangements might be venomous but they are also pretty bloody clever. You’re immediately engaged, drawn in and then kept on your toes. Much of the song construction is unconventional giving the album a unique flavour. The vocals are about as genuine as you can get. You get all the emotions loud and clear. Pain, anger, sorrow, outrage, and yes, hope. A wanting and hoping for something better. The way Anna conveys those words, often wailing heartbreakingly, is just honest. And while many sing about activism she also takes part, maybe that’s why it sounds so real. Because it has been and still is being lived. This isn’t just a great record, it’s an important one graphically demonstrating what social conscience looks and sounds like. Hawxx don’t just make music, they try to make a difference.
