Review: Jayler – Voices Unheard

Jayler

Voices Unheard

Silver Lining Music

After creating a buzz on the live music scene and becoming a favourite on the festival circuit, Jayler have finally released their debut album. The quartet has established a signature aesthetic and sound inspired by 1970s hard rock. Of course, they are too young to have experienced the heyday but they have successfully captured the essence and put their own modern spin on it. The ‘Intro’ is a short harmonica tune which sets the scene well, cool and timeless. ‘Down Below’ swings in, harmonica in hand, blinding riffs, catchy lyrics and James Bartholomew on the mic with his impressive pipes. That dude can sing! We absolutely love ‘Riverboat Queen’ and couldn’t help but hang on to every lyric and sway to the beat. As with all their tracks they have the vintage vibe but production is incredibly slick. ‘Need Your Love’ has that sleaze rock element to it, has lots of energy and is really fun to listen to. These guys know how to write a catchy beat and hook, after one listen you will know the words to most of these songs. ‘Bitter Sweet’ takes you back as it’s a slower and melancholic song. Bartholomew shows he can hit those high notes in this slow and sensitive number. For these reasons it is one of the stand out tracks of the album. ‘Love Maker’ is full of energy and swagger with killer guitar riffs and solo. What’s not to love? Closing with ‘The Rinsk,’ a track where the guitars truly take center stage. We are big fans of the bluesy undertones found in some of their songs, and this one is no exception. With psychedelic instrumentals and the inclusion of spoken word samples, it successfully captures that distinct 1970s aura. With a debut album now under their belts the future for Jayler looks bright as they are set to take on a world tour which includes a support slot with none other than Deep Purple. We look forward to hearing these songs live to really feel the raw energy behind it.
