Review: Frozen Soul – No Place Of Warmth

Frozen Soul

No Place Of Warmth

Century Media Records

Despite hailing from the subtropical climate of Fort Worth, Texas, Frozen Soul deliver a glacial, frostbitten brand of death metal that’ll send a shiver down the spine of even the most hot-blooded metalhead. Album number three, No Place Of Warmth, is no exception and finds them consolidating their position as leading lights in the current death metal revival. Testament to the band’s standing is thecalibre of guests they’ve attracted on this release, and no more so than My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way who adds his talents to the opening (and title) track. The following ‘Invoke War’ features a turn from Machine Head’s Rob Flynn, whilst Sanguisugabogg’s Devin Swank brings the gore to the fore on ‘Dreadnought’. Such illustrious names could easily overshadow a lesser band, yet they’re absorbed into Frozen Soul and become part of the whole. That’s primarily due to the band’s multi-pronged attack: within their warlike sound there’s a lot of variety to be found with tempos and rhythms in constant motion, Frozen Soul churning out riffs like putrefying meat fed through a grinder. Fusing classic American death metal (Obituary) to the early Earache sound (Bolt Thrower) was always going to be a winner, and No Place Of Warmth hits the jackpot.
