Six Feet Under
Next To Die
Metal Blade Records
Originally formed as a side project by vocalist Chris Barnes whilst a member of Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under became his sole focus in 1995 and since then has left a discography that resembles a serial killer’s bloody trail. Far more experimental than Chris’ previous band, Six Feet Under never stay in one sonic space for long and whilst they aren’t going off radar, their latest album, Next To Die, straddles several styles at the more extreme end of metal. From Sabbath-like doomy dirges to thrashy slabs of death, this album is a rolling wheel that is in perpetual motion. It is with the hulking ‘Approach Your Grave’ that Next To Die gets underway and it stalks in a suitably sinister fashion, instilling a sense of foreboding in the listener like the most depraved slasher flick set to music. This album contains a dozen bloodthirsty tracks that cut right to the bone and paint the walls a crimson shade of red. Chris Barnes is in fine fettle and turns in a diverse performance, styling his voice to each song and the overarching feeling is of a band reborn and reenergised. Next To Die will give Six Feet Under a touch of immortality.
