Review: At The Gates – The Ghost Of A Future Dead

At The Gates

The Ghost of a Future Dead

Century Media Records

A life-affirming listen from Swedish melodic death metal band At The Gates, this is a heartbreaking album that demands headbanging of the highest order. Set to be released more than two years after completion in the studio, β€˜The Ghost of a Future Dead’ is a tribute to frontman Tomas Lindberg, who sadly passed away in September 2025. Tomas was involved in every single detail of this release – and what a legacy he’s left. His vocal performance across β€˜The Ghost of a Future Dead’ is perfection. And, of course, it’s beyond poignant. The instruments cast spells and weave soundscapes (β€˜The Dissonant Void’, β€˜The Unfathomable’) and build and build before detonating utter musical devastation (β€˜A Ritual of Waste’, β€˜Tomb of Heaven’). All tracks are fronted by a throat-slitting vox that sadly will sing no more. So go live your lives to the full friends – the stakes have never been so high. β€˜The Ghost of a Future Dead’ is more than one of the most moving melodic death metal albums you will hear – it’s one of the most moving albums you’ll ever hear, full stop. It’s a masterpiece.
