Review: Black Label Society – Engines of Demolition

Black Label Society

Engines of Demolition

Spinefarm Records

Undisputed lords of the riff, kings of crunchy guitars and givers of all that is heavy, loud and good, Black Label Society are back. And they’ve brought their first studio album since 2021 with them in all its noisy, gnashing yet gentle and gut-wrenching glory. β€˜Engines of Demolition’ is a beautifully balanced record. Colossal opener β€˜Name in Blood’ is a classic BLS scorcher, and chugging β€˜Gatherer of Souls’ further stokes the furnace. But by song number four – β€˜Better Days and Wiser Times’ – that emotive, thought-provoking, slower song writing that Black Label Society so excel at eases its way into the running order and is a further reminder of why this band have been about for more than 25 years. Because this is how it’s done. β€˜Broken and Blind’ gets back to headbanging business, and thundering β€˜Lord Humungus’ is sheer power. Final track β€˜Ozzy’s Song’ is a fond farewell ballad to the man who started it all for many. β€˜Engines of Demolition’ is as moving as it is monstrous and shows you’re always in safe hands with Black Label Society.
