Review: Carpenter Brut – Leather Temple

Carpenter Brut

Leather Temple

No Quarter Prod

Closing the trilogy started and continued by ‘Leather Teeth’ and ‘Leather Terror’ this latest and last album in the series continues the story of Lita Conner (that surname isn’t lost on anyone) and Bret Halford (neither is that one) and their attempts to overthrow the tyrannical Iron Tusk. It’s a story that is the imagining of a movie that doesn’t exist other than in the listener’s head. It’s actually a rather clever concept realised in music that stays consistent throughout the years it took to produce. There’s a grandeur to what is ultimately a dark wave sound. You get quite a lot of industrial in the mix too. We’ve needed an artist to come up with something expansive like this for ages now –  there’s been precious little since Jean-Michel Jarre dropped the classic ‘Oxygène’ on an unsuspecting public way back in time. Finally Carpenter Brut fills that gap, and then some. Progressive, coherent and immensely enjoyable ‘Leather Temple’ is a prime example of how good something can be when an artist is given the freedom to stay true to their vision.
