Paleface Swiss
The Wilted (EP)
Blood Blast Distribution
Deathcore, perhaps more than any other genre, became trapped within its own confines; bands found their own niche and seemed content to exist inside those parameters. That’s what made Paleface Swiss’ arrival in 2017 a breath of fresh air (or a foul stench?); here was a group intent on kicking down walls and pushing at boundaries, leaving the pig squeals and breakdowns in the rear-view mirror. Paleface Swiss haven’t completely excavated their roots, they’ve certainly retained the heaviness that is intrinsic to deathcore, yet the band have a genre fluidity which deftly avoids easy categorisation. It means that their latest release, The Wilted, is a colourful affair that packs a lot into its five tracks and is a cup overflowing with neat ideas. After a brief, discombobulating introduction Paleface Swiss get straight down to business with ‘Withering Flower’ and assault the listener with some skull-crushing riffs. However, true to the band’s modus operandi, they don’t stay in one place for long, blossoming with ‘Instrument Of War’ then entering a state of nyctinasty with closer ‘Everything Is Fine’, the vocals becoming cleaner as the EP progresses, adding an emotional weight to an already hefty sound. The Wilted finds Paleface Swiss in full bloom and ready to crossover into the mainstream.
