Review: Uuhai – Human Herds

UUHAI

Human Herds

Napalm Records

After setting the internet alight with a series of music videos, Mongolian band UUHAI make a bold statement with debut album Human Herds. East and west clash in cataclysmic fashion as traditional throat singing and folk from the Steppe is placed over evocative metal soundscapes. It’s an approach that gives UUHAI a lot of musical freedom and aided by a wide, expansive production they magically transport the listener to their homeland via a series of songs that seem to live and breathe. Singing in their native tongue is no obstacle to understanding the meaning of these songs and the universal themes of man’s disconnect from nature is something to which everyone can relate. However, tracks such as ‘Khurai’ are rooted in the Far East in much the same way that black metal is synonymous with Scandinavia, meaning UUHAI offer an authentic view of Mongolian culture. Proving that metal is indeed a global language, ‘Khar Khulz’ is sure to ignite stages the world over whilst ‘Uvdis’ is so heavy it could trade blows with Black Sabbath (and possibly win). In our age of division and fragmentation UUHAI offer an a more positive outlook, and with Human Herds in their arsenal, the future’s looking bright.
