Review: Obelisk – Brushed By Darkness

Obelisk

Brushed By Darkness

Self Released

We love a bit of a mystery don’t we? Here we are wondering who the masked musician known as Obelisk is? They’ve certainly got an ear for modern metal, and a talent for writing. ‘Brushed By Darkness’ is a multi-dimensional gem. It spans heavy music from metalcore to doom to melodic rock. There’s a sense of grandeur in the compositions with soaring well toned synths a feature. Cleaner keyboard use suggests at least a passing familiarity with things symphonic. Vocally we get treated to visceral growls alongside well presented natural singing. Obelisk is a pleasant conundrum with Sleep Token or Bring Me The Horizon coming to mind in places while you get an overall sense of theatre running from first song to last. Whoever they may be let’s hope they continue to make albums like this one.
