Envy Of None

It’s a testament to over 5 decades of music that legendary guitarist Alex Lifeson makes his side project look like it’s been his main band all along. It might be the fact that here he’s allowed the freedom to just be himself, or the fact that he’s surrounded himself with equally amazing musicians, but this second album doesn’t feel second in any way. Instead, it feels more like just another album from a well-established band. This is all the more remarkable given the relative youth of their singer Maiah Wynne who comes into this album straight off her own solo debut. It’s an album that draws so much influence from each band member’s experience, from jazz and reggae to Indian music. There’s even some early Beatles thrown in for good measure. Despite his age Alex still manages to pull off some amazing guitar solos, that perfectly blend with Maiah’s vocals, Andy Curran’s bass, and Alfio Annibalini’s keyboards. Hopefully there will be plenty more albums to come, but they’ll have to be something special to better this one.
