Review: Necronomicon Ex Mortis – The Mother Of Death

Necronomicon Ex Mortis

The Mother Of Death

Self-Released

Horror movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s have been the lyrical chowder of choice for death metal bands since the scene’s inception and it’s likely to provide inspiration for years to come, and why not? Those blood soaked words take on new potency when delivered in a guttural growl and fit the double-bass blast beats like hand in shredder. Necronomicon Ex Mortis have moved fast since their inception in 2022 and now have four EP’s to their name the latest of which, The Mother Of Death, continues the process of weeding out influences in favour of their own signature sound. In fact, opening shot ‘Trick Or Treat’ couldn’t be anyone but this Chicago crew as they set about dissecting the listener with a razor sharp scalpel. The band are wise enough to incorporate other genres into their palette which makes them hard to pigeonhole as “just” death metal; ‘Itchy Tasty’ is a beautiful progressive suite that soon takes on a sinister air and sets things up nicely for closer ‘Salem’s Lot’ which showcases some stellar shredding. After softening us up with a series of singles and EP’s, it’s time for Necronomicon Ex Mortis to go in for the kill with an LP, and personally, we can’t wait.
