Review: Hidden Mothers – Erosion / Avulsion

Hidden Mothers

Erosion / Avulsion

Church Road Records

Hidden Mothers have experienced a steep incline over the past year, and this debut full-length and first for the prestigious Church Road Records is the accumulative effect of all the band’s hard work. Blasting forth with the brutal and beautiful lead single, Defanged its firm statement of intent that lets you know they seriously mean business. It’s also the first glimpse of Hidden Mothers’ secret weapon, Luke Scrivens’ incredibly lush, clean vocals, soothing Liam Knowles forceful bellow to awe-inspiring effect! Death Curl introduces itself to blissful lilting guitars and skittering drums by the masterful Adam Kossowicz on percussive duties. Once again, it’s back and forth between harsh screams, soulful crooning and the inevitable crushing guitar crescendos; this is truly a band in total ascendancy. Elsewhere, the Grandfather / Violet Sun pairing showcases Luke’s top 40-ready voice as he explores lower registers and marks Hidden Mothers out for a sharp rise as one of the UK’s most exciting acts in any genre. Caton Green and The Grey are fantastic displays of scene setting ambience and Ari Malekpour’s genius at catching mood with his NASA-esque array of guitar pedals with Joe Clayton’s genius as a producer de jour. This is truly a contender for album of the year and demands your attention on release. Nothing would make us happier than Hidden Mothers getting the mainstage treatment they deserve.
