Review: Skillet – Revolution

Revolution

Self Released

Christian rockers Skillet are back with their twelfth studio album and for the first time ever it’s an independent release. So what’s different? Well the production quality is still up there with the very best that labels put out. As ever this is first and foremost a set of rockin’ songs, not a preachy vehicle. So all good their too. The music cuts just as deep as you’d expect too. Solid innovative writing, a Skillet trademark, runs through ‘Revolution’ like lettering in a stick of rock. There are some fine sing along moments coupled with deft guitar work, and that means this record will transfer to the live environment with ease. The synths need a mention too, particularly on ‘Fire Inside Of Me’ where they come to the fore. The band’s identity is interwoven around John Cooper’s classic vocal style and here he shines as brightly as ever. Long term fans of the Memphis quartet and newbies alike will struggle to find anything not to like on ‘Revolution’. It may not be boundary challenging in a fast shifting scene but it is well built to stand the test of time.
