Review: Voodoo Circle – Hail To The King

Voodoo Circle

Hail To The King

AFM Records

Casting a spell over listeners since 2008, Voodoo Circle play that kind of hard rock/heavy metal that the Germans do so well; powerful, punchy and pugnacious (everything good music should be), latest album Hail To The King makes its presence felt from the very first note. Wearing their influences on their collective sleeve, Voodoo Circle’s seventh album is a love letter to every band who made metal great; Purple, Rainbow and Whitesnake are all in evidence here, only given a polish and service for the new millennium. Featuring the talents of British vocalist David Readman, tracks such as ‘Black Country’ are pure Zeppelin riffage with Voodoo Circle sculpting huge structures from sound in honour of the majesty of hard rock. There’s something so very life-affirming about the likes of ‘Strangers In The Night’ that act as musical defibrillators to shock us from our slumber. Voodoo Circle show why hard rock never died; over the years it has seen off punk, two-tone, rave and grunge, and if anyone else wants to take a swing, well, give it your best shot. Hail To The King and hail to the riff!
