Review: Kat Von D – My Side Of The Mountain

My Side Of The Mountain

Kartel Music Group

Everyone will know Kat Von D for her range of cosmetics and as a tattoo artist. Less well known though is that she is also a music artist. The first thing you notice on ‘My Side Of The Mountain’ is Kat Von D’s voice, it’s silky smooth with a rich tone. It fits the darkwave beats perfectly. The songs shift tempo and mood well, keeping things interesting. There’s a feeling of nostalgic new romantic that runs as a theme with the production emphasising this retro style. Adding a bit of menace on ‘I Am A Machine’ is a guest appearance by Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz. Here both sets of vocals excel and compliment each other. There are some lovely delicately woven passages that show off the singer’s capabilities and range. Often understated in its delivery this is a well put together record that almost demands you listen to it in a comfy chair with a glass of red to hand and just soak up the ambience.
