Live Review: Creeper, Dreamland, Margate

Crawling out of their coffins for an intimate run of shows, Creeper set out across the UK and Ireland for their 12 Days of Night tour, and tonight we go along in antici-pation of what promised to be a total scream of a show!

Opening the show is Naut. Suitably dark and gloomy for this evening’s proceedings, they bring a great set laced with classic rock and metal influence. The three-piece from Bristol certainly know how to hypnotise and draw in a crowd with their moody performance. It’s a great way to start, and the crowd sways in agreement.

Next on the billing are Zetra a mysterious duo that has been floating their way into our peripheral vision for a while now with appearances across the UK and Europe through support or various festival appearances. The ripples of their existence have always been met with intrigue and curiosity as they are shrouded in mystery. Under a flood of red, they take their places on stage; immediately, the atmosphere shifts, and they have the whole room’s attention. Barefoot and draped in very 80’s trad goth-looking attire with painted face veiled slightly behind long hair, guitarist and one half of the duo Adam sways and sings; his voice is soft and hypnotic. On the keyboard and synth machine, the other half of the duo, Jordan also sways methodically as he plays and provides harmonious accompanying vocals. It’s all very spellbinding and an ethereal performance, and they have undoubtedly expanded their reach as their message continues to resonate with more people.

The time has come for our headliners, Creeper, and the room vibrates with energy. The admiration and love for this band is palpable before they have even stalked through the smoke into sight. It’s a stellar performance full of hits, old and new. Although this is a celebration of the latest release ‘Sanguivore,’ the set list is heavily laced with tracks from 2017’s release ‘Eternity In Your Arms’ which celebrates its seventh anniversary during this run. A glorious six of the eleven songs, in fact, including the heart-wrenching ‘I Choose To Live’, the fast-paced heavy hitter ‘Poison Pens’ which as ever encourages a decent flow of crowd surfers and sing along greats’ Hiding With Boys’ and ‘Down Below’. Song after song, the crowd’s voices sing in unison, and the connection between them and the band is undeniably strong; every member interacts and puts in their absolute all.

We are also treated to two beautiful tracks from keyboard player and backing vocalist Hannah Hermione. Although backing vocalist seems the wrong accolade as she is so much more. Her chemistry with every one of her bandmates is fun to watch, and what a vocal! These vamps are incredibly good at what they do; they have such depth and heart, and their lyrics are often poignant and relatable, always poetic and full of theatrical flair – what more could you want? William Von Ghould wears his heart entirely on his sleeve; he is a killer frontman with a hundred per cent authenticity through and through. If you haven’t joined the cult of Creeper yet, come on; we are waiting for you!
