Screamin’ At The Sky – Mascot Records

Sometimes it’s good to talk, and so it is with music artists who find a catharsis in the content of their writing. In this vein southern rock masters Black Stone Cherry are back with a work that is as deep as it is immense. What you get on ‘Screamin’ At The Sky’ is that familiar groove taken to new heights coupled with lyrics that shows a baring of the soul. In places it’s quite a dark work but is it also uplifting and full of optimism. Musically there’s a natural progression, and a little experimentation too, everything you’d want from a group moving through the gears of maturity and keen to avoid stagnation. There are some lovely nuanced guitar breaks, clever timing changes and of course the vocals are as punchy as ever. Softer passages are well thought out and add a greater depth than we’ve heard before. ‘Screamin’ At The Sky’ is Black Stone Cherry at their very best.
