Dream Awake EP – Self-released

The only problem with this speaker destroying, melodic metalling monster of an EP is that it is too short. This is a cliché, but it’s also a truth. Like Devo’s young Labrador, Defects could easily keep your attention sharp and your heart happy all day. And only one of them digs ridiculously big holes and barks at visitors. If there is any justice in the world, these tunes will easily trouble daytime radio playlists, and find themselves being performed pretty high up on festival line-ups. Their structure and delivery is such that while the tracks on ‘Dream Awake’ have come from musically mature minds, they are delivered with a vibrance and freshness. Debut single ‘Scapegoat’ opens the EP and is one of the best tracks you are likely to have heard for a while. It has everything – killer pit bouncing riffs, bone shaking growls, mad tempo changes and glorious clean singing. Each of these three tracks is essential listening. And until Defects release some more music? Just keep hitting repeat.
