Mondo Fiction – Self-Released

You know that instrumental from ‘Pulp Fiction’ that goes ‘doooo, dee do do do, do do do doooooo’? That’s right! That’s the one! Well, ‘Mondo Fiction’ has that sort of guitar. And surfy guitar. And vocals (sometimes) and vibe. Indeed, the band’s description of ‘Cinematic Metallers’ makes Devo’s life a helluva lot easier. We don’t tend to assign bands strict genres in our reviews – and thank goodness. Because where Opensight would sit is anyone’s guess. So let’s look at the evidence. Opening track ‘In Here With Us’ has a massive brass section and is pretty James Bond-y, although if you like your films it’ll probably bring a much broader range of movies to mind. Sneaky ‘Plot Twist’ is a villain’s dream theme. Choppy ‘Primitive Principle’ brings suspense, thrills and spills. ‘Mondo Fiction’ is like a trip to the flicks without the hassle of extortionately priced popcorn and the shame of leaving the theatre with a rogue pic n mix toffee stuck to your trousers.
