South Of Eden

The Talk EP – LAVA/Republic Records

‘Just a bunch of hippies in a room.’ Not Devo’s words. The band’s words. And these are fine words with which to describe South Of Eden. ‘Just a Labrador sunning himself and a peckish and jittery writer in a room.’ These, on the other hand, are fine words with which to describe Devo’s current set up. But the debut EP from South Of Eden is definitely more interesting. These guys aren’t interested in bringing bleeps and beeps and fancy schmancy goodness knows what to the table. This EP is four tracks of raw rock n roll to remind us of music’s past glories. Opening line of title track ‘The Talk’ is ‘these trying times…’ – you’ve got that right, mate. ‘Solo’ is so catchy that you may end up unconsciously singing it to your partner in crime who now works from home, realising what you have done only when they look a little upset because they think you are telling them to do one, by the medium of song. ‘Dancing With Fire’ has got impressive vocals spread across quite a range, and is a fast groove through the rock n roll book of tricks. If you like your guitar music with rhythm, funk, passion and spice, you’re in safe hands with South Of Eden.
