An album that has everything from a soul that’s seen it all, ‘Fire and Vengeance’ is a stunning set of songs that capture all sides of both sound and existence. Ricky Warwick’s unmistakable voice is lived-in enough to tell tales of making every last second count (classic, melodic rocker ‘Last Chance to Dance’) and rock n’ roll rebellion (guitar driven, screw it all anthem ‘Hellbent and Heaven Sent’). But it’s mellow enough that when he switches the tempo down (country ballad vibe ‘When the King Falls’), you feel a wrenching pull in your stomach, rather than the standard Warwick power punch to it. The lyrics across ‘Fire and Vengeance’ are clever and considered, capable of being critical and constantly worth listening to. Story-telling for adults, at a time when we need to hear a voice like musical-lifer Ricky Warwick’s most. He’s one of the real ones.
