Review: The Meffs – Business

The Meffs

Business

Frontiers Label Group

The gritty commentary served up by The Meffs has always seen them painted as punk rockers. At heart they may be but new album ‘Business’ only reinforces the fact that this snarling duo are just as at home in front of grunge or rock fans. They speak the universal language of the disaffected, pissed off and ignored so well they have become ambassadors for highlighting our lack of social conscience. Here the music is heavier than previous outings. The guitar is more distorted and in style often crosses over well into metal territory. Overall the song writing is somehow even more focussed. Throughout it all Lily Hopkins’ voice carries loud and proud spitting out the lyrics in that middle finger delivery we’ve grown to love. You can almost see her cheeky grin in your mind as she lays into the modern day to day malaise we find ourselves in. There’s a hint of vulnerability to how she delivers some of her words too, something people will relate to at a personal level. A cover of ‘Breathe’ by the Prodigy is a brave choice as a finale and it has to be said is pretty damn epic given the Meff treatment. ‘Business’ tears into the establishment with authenticity and honesty, it’s a rallying cry that the time to stand up and be counted is now.
