Modern Error – Mascot Records
You will often hear music referred to as a form of catharsis, and one many artists across the
art form will keenly utilise to exorcise their lives’ trials and tribulations. None more so than
British upstarts, Defects, whose debut bow, ‘Modern Error’, allows frontman Tony Maue to
tell his story of growing up through the care system. With riffs reminiscent of 2000s Killswitch
Engage like in “Scapegoat”, and chunky breakdowns (see “Second to None”) setting the legs
twitching for those hardcore high-kicks, ‘Modern Error’ is both familiar yet pleasantly modern.
To compliment the heavier meaty riffs, there is ambiance and melody aplenty, with the likes
of “End Of Days” and “Dream Awake” harking modern metal marvels, Spiritbox. While
innovation takes a back seat, the heart comes to the fore, with “Echo Chamber” showcasing
the best of the band’s sound, marrying heavy to emotive adroitly. An avenue worth mining
further for their sophomore
