All-immersive from the outset, Future Palace’s new release starts life drenched in synths, soaring electro and full range sweet to rough vocals in opener ‘Deep Blue’. The Berlin trio are on album number four, but from just the first song there’s no doubt this band are fresh, focused and ferocious as ever, with more to both say and offer. The fist-pumping call to arms chorus of ‘Resurge’ gives this nu metal monster even more power and purpose. Following this track with choppy, building-bigger-and-faster-than-a-tsunami ‘Supernova’ gives no rest but maximum impact. ‘Disintegrate’ and ‘The Shades’ are melodic post-hardcore meltdowns which are that little bit slower – meaning the album’s themes of depression, doubt and emotional transformation can be heard that little bit louder. Switching from mournful to manic in the space of a few seconds, ‘Thorns’ is also a showcase for Maria Lessing’s limitless vox. More mellow ‘Ebb and Flow’ is completely rock radio ready. ‘Future Palace’ is a musical and emotional masterpiece.
