Since their formation in 2013, Fuming Mouth have been in perpetual refinement; although they have developed their very own sound (a rather nifty crust/death metal hybrid), there’s no danger of this New England crew standing still. Chipping away at stone and cutting off dead wood, Fuming Mouth have honed their sound with each release, and it feels they have finally reached their zenith with long player number three, the ominously titled The Ringing Bell. There’s a sense of urgency surrounding this release; a brief squeal of feedback is the only warning we receive before the band start cracking skulls with ‘Cheat Death’, 143 seconds of musical violence that succinctly sets out the band’s stall. Aided by a rich, stocky production, the band’s sound flows like rivers of molten lava, subsuming and setting aflame everything it touches, pulling the listener along on an inescapable current. It’s an approach that gives them a lot of freedom, with the doomy ‘Vivid Revelations’ sitting next to the hardcore blast of ‘Flourishing Flesh’ quite effortlessly, and, no matter what guise they appear in, a sense of oppression hangs heavy, reverberating throughout and is the glue that holds the album together.
