Review: Blackmarket – Radical Views (EP)

BlackMarket

Radical Views (EP)

Self-Release

If you are yet to make the acquaintance of BlackMarket then their latest EP, Radical Views,is probably the best way to be introduced. Featuring four genre-defying cuts, they deliver an intoxicating mash-up that pulls together various strands of metal and fuses them into songs that are at once fresh and familiar. Groove laden opener ‘Asphyxiate’ brings to mind the unstoppable drive of Stray From The Path and the weighty punch of Knocked Loose, yet the sound contained within is all their very own. Despite containing only four tracks, Radical Views has the feel of a concept album, with themes foreshadowed and motifs echoing throughout. However, it is the addition of synths that give BlackMarket their unique edge, and while keys might be an anathema to some in heavy music, the band use them to great effect, giving the EP a textured feel and bottomless depth. Tracks such as ‘Bleed’ successfully transfer their incendiary live sound from stage to studio, and will ignite pits like a spark to tinder. If proof were needed that hard times create tough art, look no further than BlackMarket’s Radical Views, an EP so heavy it should be illegal.
