Neurosis
An Undying Love For A Burning World
Neurot Recordings
I don’t think anyone had this album on their bingo card for 2026, and that’s before we even get to the fact that disgraced former frontman Scott Kelly has been replaced by ISIS and Sumac post-metal royalty Aaron Turner. This is, on paper, the closest post-metal will have to a true supergroup, but is it as good as we hope? Well, since this album dropped from the sky with no warning (or advanced promo) into the playlists of the world at the same time, you’ve probably heard it for yourself already, but here’s our take….
This album is everything you hoped for and more! The addition of Turner is the marriage of the year. Mere seconds into ‘Mirror Deep’ and you are swept away in a tsunami of riffs, drums, and chants. It’s all you can do to keep your head above water. It’s the biggest opening salvo to an album we’ve heard in years. Quickly, it leads to a coda of analogue synths before it returns to finish you off. Oh Lordy Lord, this is a huge record! First Red Rays is classic Neurosis: fuzzed-out stomp with a deathly bellowing vocal that dooms you forever.
‘Blind’ ventures out into a desert storm on acid. It is equal parts sun-kissed and melancholic as it marches slowly into oblivion. If we went through every detail of this multifaceted record, this review would be a novel. But listen to the rolling ‘Untethered’ or the final synth-laden, tripped-out ‘Last Light.’ Tell me if this isn’t one of the greatest albums from a band that only puts out amazing records. Welcome back, oh sleeping dreamers.
