Review: Mothica – Somewhere In Between (EP)

Mothica

Somewhere In Between (EP)

Sharptone Records

You need life experiences aplenty to write music with this much depth. Mothica opens up here in a way that examines the pull of something you know is a dark place, the wanting, the battle and choices. Clearly the fact that she has overcome so much doesn’t make her invulnerable and we hear this loud and clear in this mesmerizingly beautiful EP. The flavours are gothic, synth and rock, which pounds away for much of the time but has lighter delicate, more ethereal moments too. The vocals are rendered with the kind of maturity that has you checking to see how long this amazingly talented artist has been around. There are little pop hints too, both in the vox and the music itself. The production is polished too but more velvet than silk, it has the texture to match the gravity of the lyrics. ‘Somewhere In Between’ also finds a niche that makes Mothica not only a shoe in for the alternative scene but a candidate to be a huge hit in the wider music world. This is one moth that looks likely to not burn in the flame but soar into the light.
