Crystal Lake
The Weight Of Sound
Century Media Records
There’s surely only one way for an album titled The Weight Of Sound to arrive and that is with all feet kicking and fists flying, and that’s exactly how Crystal Lake’s sixth album makes its introduction. With the help of David Simonich (Signs Of The Swarm) ‘Everblack’ ensures Crystal Lake connect with a bone-splintering punch, and it sets the tone for the coming eleven songs. It’s the first of five guest spots in the vocal department and new singer John Robert Centorrino could possibly have taken this as an indictment on his own ability, yet throughout this album (and most notably the title-track) he turns in a stellar performance, leading from the front and making the mic his own, meaning Crystal Lake are operating with a confidence that was missing of late. Subsequently, the band aren’t adverse to taking a few risks and finds them stepping outside the confines of metalcore to unleash their most diverse album, and one which draws from the whole spectrum of heaviness. There’s also lither moments too, as exemplified by closer ‘Coma Wave’, a shift in sonics and a brave move, and one which only a band at the top of their game could pull off. All of which makes The Weight Of Sound heavy poundage.
