Review: The Birthday Massacre – Pathways

The Birthday Massacre

Pathways

Metropolis

In a world where albums can take over a decade to write it’s good to see bands with a regular output of music. Even better though is that the quality of the music is consistently high. Pathways is definitely one of their better albums and is instantly recognizable for the band’s sound. There’s still a market for 1980s inspired industrial synthesizer music, which is a good thing as that’s what the band does best. The album starts off dark and moody with Sleep Tonight and All Of You before going into the ballad The Vanishing Game. Title track Pathways is back to their classic industrial sound with a driving beat that pushes the album forward. Whisper is a personal favourite on the album with its darkly gothic undertones. Wish is an 80s teen movie starring Molly Ringwald in music form. The album finishes off with Faces and the ballad Cruel Love. All in all, it’s 8 very different tracks that pull together to make an album that stands out in a back catalogue spanning 25 years.
