Tonight is a special night for us. We were absolutely blown away by New Ghost’s album, ‘A Dagger In Every Tide’, this year, and we finally get to see its beautiful tracks performed live in intimate surroundings at Boom in Leeds as part of LVDS’ Gimfest on a stormy, windswept evening here in the north.
First, we take in the gothic pop stylings of the eighties revivalist group Death Trippers. We are greeted with beautiful, ethereal post-punk vibes delivered with full authenticity. The drum machine rhythms and vintage keys are pitched perfectly, setting the atmosphere. That all-important chorus affected six and twelve-stringed guitars, giving us The Cult and Sisters Of Mercy vibes perfect for a gloomy winter evening in Leeds. Sasha delivers stark, deep vocals that are soaked in unflinching cool. It’s a great set and a band we will look for in the future.
New Ghost explodes onstage with ‘Cherry Violence’ from their incredible ‘A Dagger In Every Tide’ album. Any wishes that the album would translate live are granted, and waves of melody and warm fuzzy vibes drench the crowd here at Boom; this band are simply blissful. They follow up with ‘Over’, and hearing these tracks in a live environment turns them into a very different beast, this one definitely has teeth! The twin vocals of Chris and Ellie Dance around each other, delightfully confirming New Ghost as one of the most rewarding discoveries of 2024.
The band takes their time with their arrangements and never drags for a second; it’s an explosion of sound that is mesmerising and ambitious. New Ghost see us out on the 2023 single ‘The Wolf Of Allendale’ and deliver a warm hug in their glorious technicolour tumbling melodies. When they sing you feel like you have a new song for when summer swings back around. It may be stormy outside, but it’s a beautiful sunny day here in Boom. New Ghost is a magical band that should be available on the NHS for stress relief; go check them out immediately!
